O-Rings - Silicone VMQ (MVQ), FDA, 70 Shore A
O-rings are circular sealing rings with a round cross-section. When an O-ring is fitted into a groove and compressed between two surfaces, it forms a seal that prevents the escape of liquids or gases.
These O-rings are made from silicone rubber, designated VMQ and also known as MVQ. Silicone has an exceptionally wide working temperature range, remaining flexible at very low temperatures and stable at high temperatures. It has excellent resistance to ozone, oxygen, UV light, sunlight and weathering. Silicone does not impart odour or taste, which makes it a preferred material for food handling. At 70 Shore A, the material offers a good balance of flexibility and durability, making it the standard choice for general-purpose sealing.
The compound complies with FDA requirements for rubber articles intended for repeated use in contact with food.
Chemical Compatibility
Silicone is recommended for use with hot air, animal and vegetable oils and fats, engine and transmission oils, non-petroleum-based brake fluids, water and dilute salt solutions.
Limitations
Silicone is not recommended for use with petroleum-based fuels, aromatic hydrocarbons or concentrated acids. Because silicone has low tensile strength, low tear strength and poor abrasion resistance, these O-rings are intended for static sealing only and are not recommended for dynamic applications. Silicone also has high gas permeability.
Applications
These O-rings are suitable for static seals in food and beverage processing equipment, equipment exposed to very high or very low temperatures, and equipment used outdoors.
Installation Guidance
Make sure that the groove and mating surfaces are clean and free from burrs. The 70 Shore A compound is flexible enough to fit easily and to seal well against a range of surface finishes. Silicone tears more easily than other elastomers, so take particular care not to stretch or roll the O-ring over sharp edges, threads or ports. Apply a thin film of compatible lubricant before fitting, and make sure that it is suitable for food contact where required.
