O-Rings - Silicone VMQ (MVQ), 60 Shore A
O-rings are circular sealing rings with a round cross-section. When an O-ring is fitted into a groove and compressed between two surfaces, it forms a seal that prevents the escape of liquids or gases.
These O-rings are made from silicone rubber, designated VMQ and also known as MVQ. Silicone has an exceptionally wide working temperature range, remaining flexible at very low temperatures and stable at high temperatures. It has excellent resistance to ozone, oxygen, UV light, sunlight and weathering. At 60 Shore A, the material is soft and flexible, so it conforms well to rough or uneven surfaces and seals with low compression force, making it well suited to low-pressure applications.
Chemical Compatibility
Silicone is recommended for use with hot air, animal and vegetable oils and fats, engine and transmission oils, non-petroleum-based brake fluids, water and dilute salt solutions.
Limitations
Silicone is not recommended for use with petroleum-based fuels, aromatic hydrocarbons or concentrated acids. Because silicone has low tensile strength, low tear strength and poor abrasion resistance, these O-rings are intended for static sealing only and are not recommended for dynamic applications. Silicone also has high gas permeability. As a soft compound, 60 Shore A silicone is not recommended for high-pressure applications, where a harder grade is required to prevent extrusion.
Applications
These O-rings are suitable for low-pressure static seals in equipment exposed to very high or very low temperatures, equipment used outdoors, and assemblies with delicate components such as plastic or glass, where low sealing force is needed.
Installation Guidance
Make sure that the groove and mating surfaces are clean and free from burrs. The 60 Shore A compound requires little force to fit and seals well against rough or uneven surfaces. Silicone tears more easily than other elastomers, so take particular care not to stretch or roll the O-ring over sharp edges, threads or ports. Apply a thin film of compatible lubricant before fitting.
