O-Rings - NBR Nitrile, 60 Shore A
O-rings are circular sealing rings with a round cross-section. When an O-ring is fitted into a groove and compressed between two surfaces, it forms a seal that prevents the escape of liquids or gases. O-rings are suitable for both static and dynamic applications.
These O-rings are made from NBR (nitrile butadiene rubber), which has excellent resistance to mineral oils, hydraulic fluids and greases, along with good mechanical strength and wear resistance. At 60 Shore A, the material is soft and flexible, so it conforms well to rough or uneven surfaces and seals with low compression force, making it well suited to low-pressure applications.
Chemical Compatibility
NBR is recommended for use with mineral oils and greases, hydraulic oils, diesel and fuel oils, aliphatic hydrocarbons (such as propane and butane), vegetable oils, silicone greases and water-based hydraulic fluids (HFA, HFB and HFC). Dilute acids and alkaline or saline solutions are generally acceptable at moderate temperatures.
Limitations
NBR is not recommended for use with aromatic hydrocarbons, chlorinated hydrocarbons, ketones (such as acetone), esters, strong acids, glycol-based brake fluids, phosphate-ester hydraulic fluids or methanol. Petrol with a high aromatic or ethanol content may require a specialist grade. NBR has limited resistance to ozone, sunlight and weathering, so it should not be used where it will be exposed outdoors for long periods. As a soft compound, 60 Shore A NBR is not recommended for high-pressure applications, where a harder grade is required to prevent extrusion.
Applications
These O-rings are suitable for low-pressure sealing in pneumatic systems, valves, pumps, fuel and lubrication systems and general industrial machinery, and for assemblies with delicate components such as plastic or glass, where low sealing force is needed.
Installation Guidance
Make sure that the groove and mating surfaces are clean and free from burrs. The 60 Shore A compound requires little force to fit and seals well against rough or uneven surfaces. Apply a thin film of compatible lubricant before fitting, and do not stretch or roll the O-ring over sharp edges or threads.
